11 Down, 25 to go

Initially, I wasn't planning on including these books in my count...but, I think I will just to help me out :)

They are books really for the pre-teen and teenage kids, but I am reading the series to Jaden...so...here is what I thought of the first one. We finished it a little while back and we just finished the second one, which I will post soon as well.

The Door in the Dragon's Throat (Cooper Kids Adventures (Crossway Paperback)) The Door in the Dragon's Throat by Frank E. Peretti

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am reading this book to my son as he is not quite old enough to read it on his own. I picked it up specifically for he and I to do together as good father-son time...and I had read some of Peretti on my own and really enjoyed it.

This was a great book for the pre-teen and early teen set. I think that finding an author who can tell a story and interest the kids while also keeping characters biblically minded might be difficult, but Peretti did a great job of it. He pulled up just a few scriptures but wove it into the story line and had the characters act like normal people that have a strong faith that they rely on...maybe it is a little overdone in spots, but with the age range that this is intended for, I would not expect subtlety to reign.

So, neat locations to engage kids in thoughts about geography and alternate cultures....check.

An entertaining story...check.

Something that ultimately shows that good defeats evil...check.

A biblical perspective that keeps truth in the forefront...check.

A book and a series that I will enjoy with all of my sons?... Check :)

Prophet

Prophet Prophet by Frank E. Peretti

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Another quick and engaging read by Peretti. He has a great way of telling a story where the action and conversations and the people are straight out of the real world...you could believe that this was happening now...with the details of someone familiar with the professions and surroundings, all while giving you an entirely different perspective due to God's hand being involved. A book like this just opens your mind to how big God is and that you don't really consider that fact on a regular basis...you just do what you do, and if someone is speaking to you about how God is reaching out to them, you sort of wonder whether they are a little crazy or if they are reaching or something...but just because their experience isn't like anyone else's does not negate that experience...why couldn't God be big enough to reach people in individual ways? And that is what I get out of this book as God allows a modern day prophet to participate in his plans as our modern day, consumeristic culture fights to be politically correct.

Piercing the Darkness

Just finished this book by Frank Peretti. It was a continuation of the storyline in the book I read just a short bit ago called This Present Darkness. Enjoyed this one as much as the first. I hope that I can keep the presence of mind that I got from this book about how important prayer is to the spiritual warfare that is waged all around us even though we can not see it. I don't know if Peretti's interpretation of prayer is close to what is truly there, but I know that if it is important enough to God and Jesus to be throughout the Bible, then it should be even more important to me than what I currently show it to be through my actions.

This Present Darkness

Linda had told me about this book and I had enjoyed the co-authored book he did with Ted Dekker, so I read this one while on my flight today. What an awesome book. It really makes you think about spiritual warfare, our place in it, and the importance of prayer. Sometimes it takes reading something like this to wake you up to the calling we all have to be vigilent in our prayer lives. Not only is it amazing that God allows us to be part of His plan, but we have critical roles to fill...so, pray for your kids, your family, your friends. Pray for your church, community, country and anything else that the Holy Spirit prompts you on. You might never know the impact you had, but don't let it convince you that there wasn't one.
