I am a fan of Ted Dekker. He always has a surprise in store for his readers. He obviously did a ton of research for this book and it shows in some of the detailed explanations and action sequences that he presents. He gives the reader interesting peeks into the motivation of his characters without giving away too much and was certainly inventive in coming up with the way to utilize the near death experience of Daniel, the main character. I think that the portion of the book kind of went against the rest of the book and especially the serial killer's personality and "M.O.", but it did add an intriguing element to the book.



Overall, for people who enjoy crime type books, murder mystery stories, I think this is worth the read and I always enjoy when a christian writer can help bridge the gap between the real world and the spiritual realm in a way that is plausible and believable. You may feel that this is a stretch, but I think that it was well done and appluad getting those of us to think about it and see evil for what it is and where it exists...

The Drummer Boy: A Christmas Tale by Ted Dekker

A quick little book from Ted Dekker. Definitely a good read for children at Christmas time. While this is certainly a sappy read and one that you could see going to a 'Chicken-Soup for the Soul' kind of venue, it is nice to have a simple example of faith; for children by children.
How simple a task to play a drum...yet God can do immeasurably more than what we could imagine by being faithful. Anytime you can present that truth to anyone, it is a good thing.

Interesting read and good finish to the series. The imagery of both worlds and the engaging storyline that plays out in both is a lot of fun to read. Maybe it was just me, but this book seemed to lack a little bit of what the previous two had, but I can't place my finger on what it was at this point....maybe it just seemed he stretched too far on some of the points...I don't know. But, overall, loved the trilogy and I am really looking forward to the other set of books based on this storyline as well.

What I am reading

Travel always gives me time to read. This last trip, with all the layovers and time at the airport and on the plane, I definately made some progress on the books I am reading. I started and finished Chosen by Ted Dekker. Another awesome book from him as he starts a new trilogy that works within the world he created in the other trilogy.
I also began and finished a book by Phillip Yancey that was pretty awesome called Reaching for the Invisible God. I really enjoyed this one and will probably post several comments and thoughts on things he said over the next several days. It was a good read in that I had to stop and think about things and process them...I couldn't just fly through it like a novel.

Red

Finished the second book in the Ted Dekker trilogy. Now I am just waiting on the third book from the library. I think one of the most interesting parts of this book was the metaphor used for dying to our old lives and being reborn. In this particular story, in order to die, you actually had to go drown yourself in a lake. What a scary proposition! Once you had seen someone come back from the drowning, maybe it makes more sense...but the first person diving in to do that...! And while that part was scary I think it at least was representative of the type of commitment we are supposed to make, right? You can't really dip your toes into the lake of Christianity, it really is an all or nothing thing, if it is real.

The Martyr's Song

Well, I have to say thank you again to Emily and Linda for turning me on to Ted Dekker's writing. I picked this book up on Sunday from the church library and consumed it in one evening (last night). It was a short book, but powerful message. It is so powerful to me when reading about the passion that people have for their faith. Not giving away too much to say that someone dies in the book, since it is called 'The Martyr's Song'...but to have the fortitude, faith and a perspective on this life that enables anyone to give up their life for ther faith is just awe inspiring. Whether it was the disciples, missionaries or whomever, what an example to have been set by living and ultimately dying for their love of Jesus. I aspire to have that kind of faith.

Latest books I have read...

Thanks to my sister Emily who bought me this book for Christmas I am really enjoying Ted Dekker. I just finished this one today but I have already read two others in the last 2 weeks. I had not read much christian fiction before, but this stuff is pretty riveting.
