Great question

I am reading a book titled "God's Covenant of Blessing" by John P. Milton as a requirement for the Bethel class I am taking on Wednesday nights. He asks an interesting question about midway through the book, and that is...
"It is remarkable how many people today regard it as self-evident that they know more about God than Abraham-simply because they live a few thousand years later...But do they? What is there about the human situation in the twentieth century A.D. that would be more likely to produce an Abraham than that of the twentieth century B.C.?"
It is a given that we all believe that we are "smarter" than the previous generation due to the fact that we are able to build upon what that generation has learned. Kids today are learning at an earlier age, more advanced topics than they were 25 years ago...that is a fact. However, does that translate into knowing God better?
We have certainly learned more about the intricacies of His creation....
We have been able to delve deeper into analyzing the words of the Bible by more scholars and in greater detail...and the Word is God....so don't we know God better today than thousands of years ago?
Maybe we know more about God, about the things He has done and maybe even how He went about doing them....but do we "know" Him better....relationally?
That I think may be the rub...cause while we may be "smarter", we rely that much more on our smarts and ignore the relationship and obedience components with God that is what Abraham lived so well.
